As some of you know, I re-trained professionally as an artist at Falmouth College of Arts, while taking time out following repeated 1st tri pregnancy losses. After graduation I worked as an illustrator, exhibited in London and Chamonix, France. I was then able to put these skills to a very personal, and sadly unexpected use, when faced with the losses of my son Matt in September 2007, and then my daughter Angelyn in July 2008.
It was amazing, and comforting, to be able to draw my son in the hospital, before we said goodbye. I was struck by how, in this precious time I was spending with him, I was really looking at him, taking him in, drawing all his features, caressing him with my pencil. An artwork takes time to do - and so you are giving the baby time, love, affection through the paintbrush, or crayon. I like to think that, through this time, and my interpretation, I am somehow passing on that same experience I had, pencil in hand, looking at my beautiful son in the hospital. The baby is getting attention as I work and lasting acknowledgement.
I was encouraged by the hospital to take photographs with both my babies, and these photos are now very precious to us. However as a trained artist, I was - frankly - disappointed with them. The deep beauty we saw just was not captured. The impact is actually quite medical and these photos seem to do them a disservice. But when I show paintings or drawings to friends and family, I can show my babies as I want them to be seen, as I remember.
If this is something that interests you please feel free to contact me.
with love to all your angels....Sara
