(bit of background 1st) My son Reece is 7yrs old but only the equivalent of a 4yr old due to an undiagnosed development delay.

This morning he had his usual 6 monthly checkup. I went there expecting to be discharged (as the hospital have done everything to try and find a reason for his delay but have come up with nothing) instead he has gained more hospital visits.

Reece was taken into hospital ill in '06 where they discovered that he had an innocent heart murmer. On his last checkup he had a heart scan and was once again told that it was just an innocent murmer. Today however when the doctor listened to his heart he said he wanted to do another scan because the murmer sounded more prominent and discovered that reece now has a leaky valve. The doctor said he will be watched closely in the heart clinic but 'not to worry' and sent me on my way. I was in shock and didnt think of asking more questions at the time but all i could think of is the doctors words 'not to worry'. I have just been told my 7yr old son has a leaking heart valve and not to worry! How on earth can a parent be told something like that and NOT worry????

Sorry just needed to get that out.

as if your not gonna worry, if i was you i would make an appointment with either your doctor or with the hspital again to discuss the implications of the leak and ask what can and will be done for your son.

Have had a look on the internet and if the 'leak' stays as it is then he wont need treatment, if it gets worse then he might need medication to support the his heart as it will put pressure on it and at its worst then he will need a valve replacement op.

So  that it stays as it is.

I hope that his heart valve gets no worse and that the drs actually give you some info on this so that you don't need to have to look it up in the internet!

as pauline n cheryl have said its ridiculas to say not to worry every parent is gonna worry when something is wrong with their child and then with them giving out lack of information (and know I'm guilty of this too) we come back searching the net looking at worst cases and worry more
I think if you get on well with your gp maybe worth a visit see if hes got the facts back from the hospital and ask him to be honest and upfront with you exactly what you could be facing based on your son as an individual so you can be a bit more prepared for the road ahead
and also maybe signs and symptoms of things you need to look out for and when it maybe an emergency or a reaccessment needed, maybe an idea to sit down at home n write down all the questions you want to ask as generally you come out thinking oh I forgot to ask this or that
not trying to scare you in anyway but feel parents should be better informed about these kind of things and everything discussed instead of hiding fact to stop paranorma as it generally causes more and greater stress

hope everything works out ok and you do get some answers that are helpful

I think you need to go back to the doctor and get a bit more information as you are bound to be worried.

  for your little boy.

Of course you are going to worry!  I would contact your GP and talk it through with him.  Ask him to get a report from the consultant or arrange a review appointment to ask any questions you can now think of.  Flaming hospitals!!!
